Elephant Friendly™ Tea plantations protect biodiversity, and our Elephant Friendly CREW trained tea farmers and community groups to conduct non-invasive citizen science monitoring of the wildlife in and around tea plantations. Thank you to all the tea growers who welcomed our team during our recent visits to wildlife corridors in India tea gardens. In our recent survey of tea plantations we learned that many people who encounter elephants regularly in tea zones are not familiar witg the signs of a male elephant in musth. Note the liquid oozing down the cheek of this bull in musth. Musth is a natural state that mature bulls enter during which testosterone levels increase. This drives breeding behaviors and also increases aggression, as naturally males fight with other males to win dominance over females for breeding. A bull in musth can be extremely dangerous to humans and if harrassed can become especially dangerous Watch for signs of musth and stay safe!
